ADE GROUP EXHIBITION / UNCOATED / AMSTERDAM

In October I had the honour of being part of a group exhibition in Amsterdam, with Uncoated, in The Photo Room, at the Playground Art Route.

The show was an immersive audio-visual environment that aimed to give the visitor a new perspective on emerging art photography. The theme of this year's Photo Room was 'identity unveiled', where visitors were challenged through the surrounding visuals of ‘how we perceive our true Self’, and the struggles that it can create, en-masse, within the whirl of the modern world.

A short interview with the show’s curator, Josephine de Fijter, can be read here.

GROUP EXHIBITION

––––› UNCOATED PRESENTS: IDENTITY UNVEILED ‹––––

’The visage perceived by others, it establishes a passage to transcend the outer world from the enclosed inner-self.’

Emmanuel Levinas

I was recently part of a group exhibition that took place at the the GlogauAIR artist residency, in Berlin. The exhibition ‘Identity Unveiled’ looked into how we can balance our role within the social system whilst discovering our identity with the question ‘how connected to the ‘Self’ are people willing to be?’

The exhibition was curated by Uncoated, which provides emerging photographers a platform to shine a photographic light on the struggle of defining one’s identity. Uncoated is a new, Berlin-based platform for contemporary photography that supports photographers by organizing socially relevant exhibitions throughout Europe.

In today’s society addictions, suicide rates, burnouts and interest in self-help books are increasing exponentially. Curator Josephine de Fijter researched into this phenomenon for 2 years and talked with numerous people. The result? Almost everyone she encountered struggles with the subject of identity in their own personal way. By hosting this exhibition, De Fijter hoped to create a starting point for raising awareness on the subject of identity.

For the show I created an installation titled ‘out of the void they came to dream’, which used sound frequencies, water, and a projector, to have each of the pictures emerge across the vibrating surface. Some of the works included for this installation /

SHIRA KELA ART FILM

I had the recent pleasure of photographing a new art film that was directed by Shira Kela, with cinematography from Peter Garajszki. The film looks at the essence of femininity through different narratives and expressions and of the traditional feminine conception and perspective from our society from the angle of its multiple cultures and backgrounds.

The film will be released in September.

SPLENDOR MAGAZINE

ANDROID SAMURAI / SPLENDOR MAGAZINE

A fashion editorial photographed for a collection designed by Halla Farhat, which was published by Splendor Magazine, as we wanted to shape a series of images that captured the power and grace of feminine strength, as a rise of the wonder women.

The rise of the wonder women, with their beauty in their strength, each empowering the other, connecting to their centre and radiating up and out into this whirling world unfurled. Standing tall, standing strong and proud, knowing their strengths and living and beating within them.

The rise of the wonder women, with their beauty within, transferred externally into each movement they make no matter their shape.

GROUP EXHIBITION

"Change is the only constant" is an aphorism related to the doctrine of 'universal flux', by Heraclitus of Ephesus. The Greek philosopher also developed the thesis of the 'unity of opposites'.

On the final day of Gallery Weekend, I will be included in a group exhibition of four international artists who will present their works to the public. The exhibited positions demonstrate that these 2,500 year old ideas are current and especially relevant for the digital age.

DAVID BOWIE

Bowie-Hauptstr-Door-Berlin-Matthew-Coleman-Photography

Standing before David Bowie's old Berlin doorway, on Hauptstr, filled with awe and thanks over this man's life. Smiling so sincerely over the way in which he showed us that we can be whoever we want to be. That death and rebirth can continue in each of our lives, as we can break free and be, continuously.

And the world aches and longs for these brave and fearless souls who burn and bare their beings to us. Those who dare to project outwards the essential nature of who they are, to open their hearts that will forever reside inside. This artist, a shimmering light who found his way into so many people’s existence, can teach us so much. Perhaps the greatest thing I walked away with was that he showed us, time and time again, to let go of fear and be who we dream to be.

I graciously bowed to Bowie in that moment, and slowly stepped away with a love for life within this whirling world.
